We have a fair size section but it's on a slope, so the garden had been stepped about half way down, but the lower part still sloped down to the retaining at the rear of the garden.
The retaining was in a bad way so this needed to be replaced. We decided that there was no real practical use for this part of the garden, the slope was to bad to use the area and cutting the grass was hard, also the previous owners had built some stuff in to the slope. So we decided to do some structural work and retain the area back up to level and turn it in to a vegetable garden.
We did not add any height but cut the top of the slope and dragged it down to the bottom to level and then covered with fresh top soil. We then added a gate and a fence to keep the "we eat anything Labradors" out of the garden and planted a load of different plants. This has been a great thing, lots of home grown veg and fruit, it was such a good thing we extended the area in front of the deck so we had more area to grow on.
Since putting in the garden the main retaining between the back of our property and the next had after 50 years given up the ghost, so we had to replace this as well, which meant that that part of the vegetable patch has been out of use for a year while it all settles and I need to finish some more work down there like fencing etc. I will put some more pictures on this page but you can see them all in the gallery at the moment.
